Companies are at it again! Hiring soared to 339,000 jobs added in May, while both April and March were revised upwards for an additional combined 93,000 jobs! A separate report surveying households found that the labor participation did not increase while unemployment ticked up to 3.7%. Although these two sets of data conflict with one another, the JOLTS report showed open positions increased to back over 10.1M with 6.1M people unemployed. The trends remain clear – hiring is strong.
Those companies with a “wait and see” approach are losing top talent. Even early summer vacations by hiring managers are damaging some employers’ ability to hire their top choice – the market is moving quickly and skilled professionals have choices. The JOLTS report did show that candidates are more reluctant to quit in this market, making scarce talent even more challenging to hire. Speedy decisions, combined with strong pay/benefits/perks, and a strong manager are the keys to hiring in this market.
